Wedding Tip Wednesday: All you need to know about preparing for your engagement session

Okay so I realize that it’s a Thursday, butttt better late than never, am I right?!

My tip/s for today are engagement session related! When preparing for your engagement session, here are a few things that you should keep in mind!

Location/Season

My best tip is for choosing when to have your engagement photos taken is to choose a season opposite of your wedding! For example, if you’re having a summer wedding, take your engagement photos in the winter! When you’ve chosen a season, make sure you play it up! For example, if you’re having your engagement photos taken in the winter, the best location to get them done at is somewhere with evergreen trees because almost everything else in the winter is going to be dead! So maybe something like a Christmas tree farm! Photos in the spring? Find a blooming orchard! Summer?! Choose your favorite lake house or beach spot! Fall? Somewhere where the fall foliage is stunning, of course!!

What to Bring

First off, make sure your bring EXCITEMENT. Cheesy, I know but if you’re dreading the session, it will show in the photos. Remember, all of my clients feel the exact same way you do. I don’t expect you to know how to model, smile or even engage the camera. But its fairly easy and I’ll make to sure to explain what you need to do and get you comfortable so that you we can create amazing images!

What to Wear

1. Bring two outfits! Start with a comfortable one, an everyday kind of outfit and end with something a little fancier!

2. I always recommend starting with your least favorite outfit. Why? Because the last set of images are always the best ones. It will take you a little to open up and feel comfortable, so wear your favorite outfit second because I can almost guarantee that you’ll love the last 50 images the most!

3.  Embrace lots of fun colors and unique styles. These photos will reflect one of the best times of your life, so bring something that will represent you!

4. Bring a prop if you like! A hat, florals, an antique bike, your dog, wine, a picnic basket…anything that tells the story of who you are and what you guys love. It’s not required, but its super fun and adds a unique element to your engagement photos.

Makeup

You only get to do engagement photos once, so if you choose to do your own make up, make sure you give yourself plenty of time! Don’t go light—the camera minimizes the appearance of make up, so don’t be afraid to go a little heavier than usual. Alternatively, this could be a great opportunity for you to have your make up trial for the wedding done!! Kill two birds with one stone!
